Intolerable Lactose

Yes, we've been dormant for a while, but we're here, we made it, we're safe! I'm still planning on updating this blog on a regular basis, but in the mean time we've started other blogs where we can share pictures and other more personal items. If you don't have the address(es), find someone who does.

Living and working abroad in an international environment sure does make one more aware of events on the world stage.

It's interesting to be on this side of the milk scare. We read about how other countries are shutting down tainted imports and recalling everything, but what about the people living domestically? We just went shopping this evening, and there are no signs of a recall anywhere. The shelves are still stocked with all manner of dairy products. Maybe they've pulled some things off the shelves, but no one's trumpeting the fact (of course, I don't watch the national news, either, so I'm not hearing what is being broadcast on the subject). In any event, walking down the aisle, what can you trust? Brand names are no guarantee of quality--it seems every company cuts corners (or, as in this case, their suppliers cut corners). You can't get away from it. You might eat out at a five star restaurant, but where do you think they get their milk from? So what do you do? Stop consuming milk, and everything that contains milk? Buy your milk from the import store at $12 a gallon? What would you do?

Gosh. If it were me, I'd continue living my live normally. If there were a similar problem in the US (like there was with tomatoes), the government would pull the affected items off the shelves.

Note that during our tomato scare, we still had some tomatoes around, just not the particular ones that were thought to be questionable. I don't know much about the milk scare, but I'd guess that any milk you can currently find on store shelves have no readily apparent connection to the tainted milk. I don't know how China would handle the situation, though.
